Uricosurics

Uricosurics

Uricosurics, such as benzbromaron, can prevent recurrent gout and formation of tophi. Uricosuric agents block reabsorption of filtered and secreted uric acid in proximal renal tubules. This action results in enhanced excretion of uric acid and thus decreased serum uric acid levels. The patients are advised to drink at least 2 liters fluid daily to increase the volume of the urine to prevent stone formation.

Therefore, uricosurics should not be prescribed to patients with serious decompensatio cordis or renal insufficiency. A successful treatment lowers serum uric acid levels and decreases the number of gout attacks. Diarrhea, rash and headache are the most common potential side effects.
