α-adrenergic agonists (mydriasis)

Theoretically, α-adrenergic agonists (sympathomimetics for mydriasis) should be able to cause mydriasis. Indeed, drugs belonging to this group do so, although the effect is much smaller than the effect of muscarinic antagonists. Via their α-adrenergic effect, these drugs also cause local vasoconstriction.

Sympaticomimetics for mydriasis are applied for diseases of the conjunctiva with symptoms such as pain, irritation and redness of the eye. Phenylephrine is the most important member of this group. Systemic side effects on the cardiovascular system can occur.
