This section shows signalling molecules and their actions in the different systems they are operating in. By showing these molecules and their actions, the possibilities for pharmacological mechanisms and all their pitfalls become apparent. The concepts of receptor diversity, post- and pre-synaptic receptors, reuptake transporters and receptor specificity will be explained in the context of the autonomic nervous system.

Examples of different neurotransmitters (NA, Ach and serotonin) will be shown. The concepts of pharmacological sites of action and ligand directed signalling will be explained in the context of different inflammatory systems. Examples of different signalling molecules (prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and glucocorticosteroids) will be shown.
