Folate synthesis
Folate synthesis
Pteridine and p-amino benzoic acid are the basis of the folic acid synthesis. Folinic acid is synthesized via three enzymes. Folinic acid itself is required for the formation of purines and pyrimidines for DNA synthesis. In contrast to humans, bacteria must synthesize all their own folinic acid.
Humans obtain folic acid from both their diet and internal synthesis.
Extra info: Humans only can obtain folic acid from their dietary intake.
The final product in the folate synthesis pathway is folinic acid.
Extra info: Folinic acid (or tetrahydrofolic acid) is the end product of the folate synthesis.
The chemical structures of PABA and sulfonamides are very similar.
Extra info: Close The chemical structures of PABA and sulfonamides are very similar. This is why both compounds can compete for the enzyme.
