Somatostatin is powerful inhibitor of GH secretion and in a lesser extent TSH secretion. Somatostatin acts via a G-protein coupled receptor. Octreotide and lanreotide are synthetic analogues of somatostatin.
Octreotide utilised in case of acromegaly is given intramuscular in depot injections once every 4 weeks (10-30 μg/ 4 weeks).
Octreotide can be used to treat acromegaly and various endocrine tumors in the GI tract.
Extra info: Octreotide inhibits the secretion of growth hormone from the pituitary and of gastrin, pepsin and acid in the GI tract.
