Tuberoinfundibular tract

Tuberoinfundibular tract

The tuberoinfundibular tract has its source nuclei in the hypothalamus and these project into the posterior pituitary.

In this graphic, the lack of dopamine throughout this system either via (1) administration of D2 receptor antagonist drugs or (2) a relative lack of dopamine leads to and increase in prolactin release.

Based on their mechanism of antipsychotic action, all antipsychotics should increase prolactin release.

5-HT2A receptor antagonism should correct antipsychotic induced hyperprolactemia.
