H2-antagonists for reflux

H2-antagonists were originally introduced for the treatment of peptic ulcers (see H2-antagonists for ulcers). However, due to the high relapse rate of reflux patients taking antacids, maintenance therapy with H2-receptor antagonists (or PPI's) is often indicated.

Tolerance can occur and patients chronically using the H2-antagonists may require higher dosages than normal.
