    Gram positive and negative

The cell walls of bacteria are essential for their growth and survival. Peptidoglycans are an essential component of the cell wall, which provide a rigid mechanical stability by a cross-linked network.

Gram-positive bacteria the cell wall consists of one membrane surrounded by a peptidoglycan layer of 50-100 molecules thick. Gram-negative bacteria only possess a thin layer (1-2 molecules) of peptidoglycans between two membranes. The outer membrane is protected by lipids with an attached sugar chain (lipopolysaccharides).

Drugs that act on the cell wall are bacteriocidal.

The outer membrane in Gram-positive bacteria forms an additional obstacle to the entry of antibiotics.
