Treatment of lung cancer

Treatment of lung cancer

Because treatment varies greatly depending on the type, stage and histology of lung cancer, the diagnostics are critical.

If possible, surgery is a good option for early stages of lung cancer. This should be followed by postsurgical radiotherapy. In more advanced or aggressive types of lung cancer, chemotherapy or combinations of chemotherapy and radiotherapy are indicated.

Targeted therapy against specific overexpressed receptors of certain growth factors (eg. EGFR en VEGF) is promising and results in longer survival.

Advanced stages of lung cancer are currently incurable. Therefore, quality of life and patient preferences are important.
