Metyrapone is a specific inhibitor of the enzyme 11β-hydroxylase, which is responsible for the conversion of 11-deoxycortisol into cortisol in the adrenal gland.
Prior to surgery, metyrapone can be applied as an inhibitor of cortisol synthesis in the treatment of Cushing's disease or of Cushing's syndrome.
