Treatment of hyperlipidemia
Treatment of hyperlipidemia
Non-pharmacological treatment of hyperlipidemia mainly aims at decreasing cardiovascular risk factors: losing weight, stop smoking, and increasing exercise. A diet consisting of low
saturated fat intake, fish, fruit, vegetables and fibers might decrease cholesterol levels up to 10%. If these factors are not sufficient in decreasing LDL levels, pharmacological treatment is required. Drug treatment includes a variety of agents (statins, bile acid resins, fibric acid derivatives, nicotinic acid, fish oils, and ezetimibe) that affect cholesterol synthesis, cholesterol losses in bile and LDL and VLDL metabolism.
